Job Description
The emergency department RN, under the direction of the charge nurse, is responsible for ensuring continuity of care during the shift while on duty, by providing direct care as well as reviewing the care given by the Emergency Department Technician, and ancillary staff members. Participating in patient and family teaching. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. Maintaining a role as patient advocate with a focus on the hospitals mission and vision statement.

III. Responsibilities
1) Primary Responsibilities
a) Shows up for work and completes entire shift, as scheduled.
b) Responsible for patient assessment, development of an individualized plan of care, implementation and evaluation of the plan of care. (Plan of careconsist of analysis, nursing diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation of interventions, and evaluation of human responses to perceived, actual or potential, sudden or urgent, physical or psychosocial problems that are primarily episodic or acute, and which occur in a variety of settings.)
c) Appropriately communicates to other nursing personnel to ensure continuity of care.
d) Maintains role as patient advocate with a focus on the hospital’s mission and vision statements.
e) Provide direction and supervision to other patient care and ancillary personnel.
f) Sets priorities based on knowledge of patient needs.
g) Adheres to the Standards of Care as outlined by the Florida State Board of Nursing
h) Organize time to complete all patient care needs within specified time frame.
i) Notify MD appropriately for changes in patient’s condition, abnormal lab values, etc.
j) Document all pertinent patient related information in ProMed / Medical Records.
k) Process physician orders in the computer system in a timely, accurate manner
l) Orients new personnel appropriately by completing orientation checklist and skills packet.
m) Demonstrates appropriate delegation of duties in meeting patient and unit needs as evidenced by the completion of all patient/unit tasks by the end of the shift.
n) Document patient/family education appropriately.
o) Obtain and document accurate height, weight, vital signs as needed and by physicians orders.
p) Completes initial assessment form completely on assigned patients within time frame outlined by the department P&P.
q) Completes admission forms: medication reconciliation, patient information hand off sheet, patient valuable sheet
r) Documents required Core Measures in patient chart.
s) Performs Department specific QC daily and documents appropriately.
t) Performs Crash Cart checks daily, documents appropriately, and corrects deficiencies immediately.
u) Contributes ides for improvements; actively participates in PI projects and on PI teams.
v) Reports accurately and concisely to oncoming shift the patient’s condition including lab values, new orders, response to medications and treatments.
w) Complies with employee health/infection control policies and procedures, and safe work practices
x) Complies with hospital policies and procedures
y) Remains current with hospital activities/in-services, changes and policies.
z) Maintains proficiencies as per standard of practice/job expectations (maintains appropriate licenses/certifications, as applicable).
2) Secondary Responsibilities:
a) Completes a thorough reassessment on patients prior to discharge/including vital signs, cardiac rhythm, pain status, response to medications/treatments.
b) Reports patient hospital or other risk issues appropriately and timely via hospital occurrence system
c) Revises plan of care per P&P and as the patient’s condition changes as evidenced by documentation on the ED encounter record
d) Distinguishes criteria for triage acuity levels
e) Evaluates progress toward attainment of goals of the plan of care.
f) Nursing documentation meets all standards (timely, complete, accurate, legiable, admissions, discharges, urgent/emergent patients, AMA, cardiac arrest, dealth, etc)
g) Demonstrated flexibility and promotes a positive attitude
h) Reports accurately and concisely to oncoming shift the patient’s condition including lab values, new orders, response to medications and treatments.
i) Accepts responsibility for care provided and makes recommendations to improve performance
j) Demonstrates ability to appropriately assess situations, establish priorities, and perform/delegate tasks as needed to meet care needs within established time frames.
k) Maintains current comprehensive, professional knowledge and skills in conformance with recognized nursing standards.
