What to Expect
In an emergency, you need attention fast and we have designed ER Extra to reduce waiting times and ensure that our patients receive immediate attention. When you first arrive to the emergency room you undergo a brief registration before being taken to triage for care.
The following information is designed to help you understand what to expect during your ER visit. Our staff is dedicated to making this process as comfortable as possible.
Triage
A nurse gathers any additional data needed for your care to move you to an attending physician for treatment and assessment, including:
• History of vaccines.
• Current medications and dosing.
• An evaluation on the level of your emergency. Assessment A member of the medical team examines your injury or illness and identifies the best path to care, including:
• A complete medical history and gathering of information related to your medical issue.
• A physical examination.
• Determination if further testing is necessary to understand your sickness or degree of injury, including x-rays and/or lab studies.
Intervention
Intervention is when the medical team acts on improving your health, injury, or treat your pain. When Intervention occurs depends on your injury.
• Each person and condition is unique and treatment varies.
• Your injury/illness may require results from lab studies for proper treatment.
• The medical team continually evaluates the success of your treatment throughout your visit.
Diagnosis
The primary mission of your emergency room visit is for immediate treatment of a life threatening injury or illness.
• Intake, assessment, testing and intervention are performed to address your current issue. A final diagnosis is made based upon evidence gathered during your visit.
• In some instances a medical condition requires repeated evaluations over time for an accurate diagnosis. Should you require further evaluations for diagnosis, your medical team refers you to visit either your family doctor or recommends a doctor on staff to follow your care.
Admission
A more severe injury or illness may require admission to the hospital and the attending physician will discuss this option with you and any family members you’ve included in your care.
• The Emergency Room doctor will contact your doctor to begin the process of admission. If you don’t have a doctor, one will be assigned that best meets your medical needs.
• The nursing staff works to keep everyone current on your condition and treatments in preparation for your admittance.
Discharge
If your condition proves treatable without hospital admission, you’re discharged with:
• A plan for necessary medications and treatments to return home.
• A complete review with your medical team explaining treatments and answers to any outstanding questions.
• A full understanding on how to care for your condition, what to expect, and if follow up care is needed.
